Message from Amina Othman, Chairperson, Board of Directors
In 2019, AfricanPovertyRelief (APR) Inc. embarked on a challenging but deeply meaningful journey. Our goal was to establish an international development agency that, in collaboration with our partners, would provide sustainable solutions to eradicate poverty across Africa. Little did we know that the world would soon be gripped by the unprecedented challenge of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, making our mission all the more vital.
As we steadfastly continue our work, it’s clear that African nations will bear the brunt of this crisis. Poverty’s grip tightens, making our efforts even more crucial.
Our initial efforts are focused on six African nations: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Somalia, with plans to expand our reach. Our approach to improving the quality of life for Africans of all ages centers around five fundamental dimensions:
- Relief of Poverty: We provide essential food and basic supplies to those in dire need, ensuring that no one goes to bed hungry.
- Saving Lives: Through education and research, we promote public health, working tirelessly to enhance healthcare access and disease prevention.
- Building Stronger Communities: Access to clean and reliable drinking water sources, sewage treatment systems, and support for irrigation farming are key to our strategy in building resilient communities.
- Protecting and Preserving the Environment: We empower individuals with skills in forestry, agriculture, and horticulture, fostering environmental conservation and sustainability.
- Minimizing Disaster Impacts: Immediate assistance and the essentials of life are provided to disaster victims, helping communities recover and rebuild.
Our Vision
At APR Inc., our vision is unwavering: to save the lives of Africa’s children and their families. We are relentless in our pursuit of a poverty-free, disease-free, and hunger-free Africa. The facts are stark, as documented by renowned sources like The World Bank, the World Health Organization, and the Food and Agriculture Organization:
- Sub-Saharan Africa is home to the largest number of people living in extreme poverty, comprising half of the world’s poor.
- Approximately 30 percent of the population lacks access to improved, reliable drinking water sources.
- One in four people in the region is undernourished.
- Sub-Saharan Africa faces healthcare challenges that are among the world’s most severe, carrying 25 percent of the global disease burden with only 11 percent of the world’s population.
- Economic hardships, drought, conflict, environmental degradation, and extreme weather continue to reverse years of progress, demanding international efforts to restore stability and prosperity.
We stand united in our ability to help communities become more resilient, to combat the external factors that drive extreme poverty and hunger, and to support families with vital health information. We call upon you to join us in this fight against poverty in Africa, either as a donor or a volunteer. In Sudan, some families have resorted to eating leaves just to survive.
